Chemical Peels - To Get One or Not

Chemical Peels - Fear NOT!

There is no quicker path to confidence than to have a smooth healthy complexion, right? If you want vibrant skin, you may want to invest in doing routine chemical peels! Did you know more than 1 million people opt for this non-invasive procedure yearly. That means, even the girl and (GUY) next door are doing this without anyone ever knowing.

Chemical peels offer a whole host of benefits that include, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, reducing the appearance of age spots and mild scars, reducing and treating acne, and can improve the texture of your skin. Intrigued yet?

Here’s how they work…..

Chemical peels damage the skin in a controlled manner, producing a superficial wound. The damaged skin regenerates through the growth of cells from deeper layers of the epidermis. As the damaged skin begins to repair itself by shedding off the top layer of the skin, new (healed) skin emerges. The new (healed) skin will have a more youthful texture with uniform coloration.

There are many different types of peels, so make sure you review with your esthetician which peel is appropriate for your skin type / condition.

Possible side effects….

The risks of chemical peels can include scarring, infections, allergic reaction, or reactivation of herpes. All patients will have a recuperation period in which the skin will need to heal itself. Depending on the peel you receive, the recuperation period can last anywhere from one week to a few weeks. Superficial peels typically have less risks associated with them, though it’s highly encouraged to speak to your esthetician about all the possible side effects.

If the benefits outweigh the side effects, this non-invasive treatment may be the exact thing you need to improve the appearance of your skin.

Morning and Night

Wash Your Face Morning and Night

“I’m too tired to wash my face tonight so I’ll just wash it in the morning.”….. Or, “I’m running late today, I’ll just wash my face when I get home.” I can’t tell you how many times I hear these statements in my profession and every time I hear them being said, I cringe! And believe me when I say, it’s the kind of cringe that is noticeable.  Let me tell you why you don’t want to skip out on washing your face both morning and night!

Night……..

While we sleep our skin repairs itself. By not washing your face every night your skin can develop problems such as acne, wrinkles, rashes or infections! Gross right? As we sleep our skin produces oils and if your skin is not clean those oils can get trapped in the pores by the top layer of makeup making them clogged and prone to breakouts. I want breakouts when I wake up, said no one ever!!

Free radicals damage collagen, which you guessed it, leads to more wrinkles. Free radicals are caused by external factors such as pollution and sun damage. If we don’t remove these pollutants from our skin each night, we are asking for wrinkles and skin that is everything but healthy and glowing.

Rashes and infections are so my look, NOT! People, as we sleep the makeup that was left on your skin can flake off and go into your eye. If you wake up with pinkeye don’t say we didn’t warn you. Rashes and infections are very serious and will need to be treated by a doctor and who has time for that? Save yourself a trip to the doctors by simply washing your face.

Morning……

You wouldn’t skip brushing your teeth in the morning as it is important to your overall health, right? So why would you skip washing your face in the morning if it is as equally as important as brushing your teeth every morning?!

We just learned that while we sleep our skin produces oils right? By not removing those oils from your face in the morning, your pores can become clogged by an excess amount of oils which can lead to more breakouts throughout the day. In addition to oil production, your skin is also exposed to dust, dirt and bacteria while you sleep. So, by washing your face in the morning you are removing impurities and preparing your skin for the day!

If you’re honing in on the overall thesis of this post, you’ll start washing your face morning and night! It’s that simple and that easy!

Flakey, Crackly Skin

It’s a known fact that cold air holds less moisture than warm air. So, with the cold, dry, brutal weather in the state of CO, each winter season we can expect flakey, crackly skin during these months.  You may feel like it’s hopeless trying to keep your skin looking healthy and fresh but I’m here to let you in on a few secrets to combat these conditions.

First secret….. drink H20! I know, your mind is now blown from this top secret piece of information I just shared with you, right?! Now, what you may not know is that we lose fluid continuously from skin evaporation, breathing, and bowel movements.  And since your body is composed of about 60% of water, if you are not replenishing these losses daily your internal and external health will likely suffer. When you’re dehydrated, your skin looks more dry and wrinkled. Though over-hydration wont erase wrinkles your skin will look much more plump and healthy with proper hydration! So seriously, drink water!

Second secret….. moisturize! I know, I know, another secret you didn’t know. Both men and women should use a facial moisturizer daily and here’s why. One, your skin appearance will look smoother and softer. Two, you can protect your skin from environmental elements such as pollution and the sun. Lastly, by applying moisturizer it stimulates the skin and improves circulation of the blood which can boost collagen levels. So seriously, use facial moisturizer!

Insiders Tip…. Use a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid in it. Hyaluronic acid helps bind moisture to your skin which in turn will help with the appearance of your skin!

Now that you have these amazing secrets, we hope you adopt these secrets into your skin routine to get healthier looking skin. We are big fans of healthy skin here at SMASH.

Mistakes you’re making when choosing a foundation for your skin type.

Mistake 1 – Not knowing your skin type….

Step one - identify your skin type; do you have normal, dry, sensitive, aging, oily, or combination skin? If you don’t know what your skin type is, book an appointment with your local esthetician and they will be able to identify your skin type.

Mistake 2 - Choosing the right foundation for your skin type…

Foundations are designed to produce different results on different skin types, so the worst thing you can do is choose a foundation that is not right for your skin type.

Oily Skin –  Purchase a foundation that is oil-free, includes ingredients like salicylic acid and has a matte finish. Avoid foundations that leave a dewy finish! Your skin already produces too much oil, so choosing a foundation that leaves a dewy finish would be a tragic mistake.

Dry Skin -  Purchase a foundation that provides extra hydration, includes moisturizing benefits and has a dewy finish. If your skin is parched, you can handle richer formulas! Avoid using POWDERS or foundations that produce a matte finish. Dry skin doesn’t produce enough natural oil to bind powder to the face, so the powder sits on top of the skin and will fall off within a couple hours of application.

Aging Skin – Purchase a foundation that is lightweight, includes ingredients that help to plump the skin and has correcting benefits that help with aging spots such has hypo and hyperpigmentation. Avoid using POWDER foundations at all costs! Powder foundations tend to settle into fine lines and cracks, which is exactly what we don’t want to draw attention to as we age. Instead, choose a water-based foundation with skin perfecting benefits.

Sensitive Skin – Purchase a foundation that is non comedogenic, fragrance free and alcohol free. Sensitive skin is very reactive and can become inflamed easily. Choose a foundation that says, “designed for sensitive skin.”

Normal Skin – Purchase a foundation with minimal coverage that includes an SPF. For a normal skin, your goal is to even the skin tone, not to correct or cover your skin. Let your freckles peak through your foundation!

Mistake 3 – Appling foundation incorrectly….

Use a foundation brush!! Sponges tend to soak up too much product, using your fingers applies uneven amounts of makeup on your face and whatever else mom or grandma taught you, throw it out the window!! (Sorry Mom)

Now, stop making these mistakes ladies! You will be amazed with the results you will see by choosing the right foundation for your skin type! Email us directly if you have any questions regarding your skin type and what foundation you should purchase.

Backed Up

We have established that what we eat can affect our skin health, but it doesn’t stop there. What we eat also influences our digestive system, which in turn can have negative effects on skin health.  If you’re feeling bloated, if you suffer from gas or if you suffer from stomach cramping, it’s highly likely your digestive system is not working properly.

Processed, refined or artificial foods are the main enemy for a compromised digestion. Blemishes, acne, eczema and rashes are just a few concerns that are highlighted in relation for poor digestive system. If you’re backed up and undigested food remains in the digestive tract, your system begins to fill with toxins from rotting foods. If you don’t poop the toxins out, guess what, your body will eliminate the toxins through other organs and since your skin is the largest organ it’s likely these toxins will eliminate through the skin.

Nutritionist have recommended eliminating processed foods, sugar, dairy, caffeine and alcohol temporarily (if not forever) for a minimum of three weeks. After that time, you can slowly introduce those foods back into your diet one at a time. Should your skin react poorly, eliminate the food or ingredient from your diet permanently. After eliminating offending foods, repair your digestive tract by adding in a probiotic, omega 3 (to fight inflammation) and water to support your digestion.

Give your digestive system and skin a break by eating clean and supporting these organs for optimal functionality and health! Here’s to pooping every single day!!!

Inside and Out

Have you ever heard the phrase, “you are what you eat?” To achieve beautiful / healthy glowing skin, one must begin on the inside before one can expect to see results on the outside.

Fact; skin is the largest organ of the human body. Eating poor foods and having an overall poor diet can lead to breakouts, blemishes and rashes. In my line of work (though I am not a nutritionist) I always ask my clients with acne what their daily diet looks like. When they answer, many times I am not surprised to hear that their diet is poor.

Certain foods cause major internal and external damage to the body, like sugar, and yet the average person consume roughly 2-3 pounds of sugar per week….that’s 135 pounds a year! GROSS. Excessive sugar intake causes tooth decay and has been linked to increased risks of obesity, inflammation and chronic diseases.  PEOPLE, if you don’t think that sugar doesn’t affect your skin health I would urge you to do your own research! Know your body inside and out and start looking at ingredients and foods that are negatively affecting your health both internally and externally.

Skin is the total reflection of your total body health, so it’s time you take your skin health serious by starting with your inside health.

The First Step

You’re never too old or too young or too anything to have an impact on the world. You just have to take the first step and get started.

Roughly two years ago I had a sense that I was quietly, privately disappointed in myself. I found myself sitting behind a desk in a fog of unwavering boredom. I had become a Business Manager for a wealth management firm. I had done everything I was supposed to do to become successful and yet I still found myself sucked dry and not happy.

So, I did what any rational person that has a dream would do; I quit my office job, got a fulltime job at a restaurant as a server and went back to school. I enrolled in an Esthetics school in Denver and 6 months later I had received my license.

Today, my dream is to become one of Denver’s most sought after makeup artist. My passion has always been makeup, even when I was a little kid with ratty hair and pimples I knew that this was the world in which I belonged and that makeup would make it into my future one way or another. Now I am looking to open a makeup boutique in early spring of 2016 to make my dream a reality.

You see, almost one year ago when I quit my office job I was told that I was making a huge mistake.  And well, if it was a mistake, it’s the best fucking mistake I’ve ever made in my entire life! I am one step closer to achieving my dream and it all starting with me taking the first step.
